Vital Role of Youth in Environmental and Peacebuilding Efforts

Vital Role of Youth in Environmental and Peacebuilding Efforts
Monday November 4th, 2024
On 22 October 2024, the Global Youth Network for Biodiversity invited Mr. Heng Kimhong to participate in a panel discussion on “Vital Role of Youth in Environmental and Peacebuilding Efforts.”
Biodiversity conservation requires effective collaboration and implementing interventions based on a solid understanding of diverse situations. As young people navigate and effectively contribute to biodiversity conservation and, therefore, to implementing the KMGBF, they face various conflict situations and contexts. In many cases, it poses a risk of physical harm that undermines young people’s ability to contribute effectively to global conservation efforts.
In the panel discussion, Kimhong provided recommendations for:
Youth Contributions:
– Advocacy and Awareness: Youth can raise awareness about peacebuilding issues through creative campaigns, art, and social media, mobilizing support and attracting attention to local needs.
– Peer Education and Leadership: By training their peers in conflict resolution and negotiation skills, young people can create a ripple effect, equipping more individuals with the tools necessary for peacebuilding.
– Innovative Solutions: Young people often bring fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to problem-solving. By encouraging them to brainstorm and implement grassroots initiatives, communities can benefit from new ideas that resonate with their unique contexts.
Expectations for COP-16:
– Adoption of Action Plans: A vital outcome would be adopting actionable plans that link biodiversity conservation with peacebuilding efforts. These plans should outline specific targets, timelines, and responsibilities for implementation.
– Commitments to Collaboration: COP16 should result in commitments from nations and organizations to collaborate on transboundary conservation efforts that address regional conflicts. This could involve joint projects that promote peace while protecting critical ecosystems.
– Strengthened Mechanisms for Monitoring: Establishing robust mechanisms to monitor and evaluate the impacts of biodiversity-related peace initiatives will be essential. This could include indicators that measure ecological health and social cohesion, ensuring accountability and adaptability.
– Increasing financial support for youth inclusive collaboration and initiatives that allow youth and the local community to initiate their solutions in their own community.
